South African rap duo Die Antwoord accused of sexual abuse by their adopted son

In a 45-minute video published in late April, the adopted son detailed alleged sexual assault by the notorious duo.

  The disturbing world of the band Die Antwoord is no longer fascinating. In the early 2010s, the wacky duo became South Africa’s most famous musical group abroad with their signature psychedelic rap-electro genre with an eerie style that depicts the everyday life of South Africa’s “white trash” and ultra-violent Cape Town gangs. Already reeling from several controversies, the couple – Watkin Tudor Jones, aka “Ninja,” and Anri du Toit, aka “Yolandi Visser” – must now face the allegations of their adopted son, who is accusing them of abuse. In the 45-minute video that was published by the South African press in late April, the adopted son also spoke about fearing sexual violence against his sister.

  Adopted at the age of 9, Gabriel du Preez, also known as “Tokkie,” grew up in Vrededorp, an impoverished neighborhood near the center of Johannesburg. He suffers from a genetic disease causing severe teeth malformations. With his handicap and shaggy hair, the little boy seemed to come straight out of the band’s videos. He would soon feature in them. In 2010, “Tokkie” crossed paths with one of the duo’s collaborators, Ben Jay Crossman, who took a picture of him. When they saw the photograph, Ms. du Toit and Mr. Jones requested to meet the child. They immediately adopted him. His mother, who lived in poverty and considering Die Antwoord’s success, thought it would be “a good experience” for him.

  ‘You’re the weird thing’

  Aged 20, “Tokkie” now claims to have been used as “a prop.” In 2012, he became the face of the group’s most famous video, “I Fink You Freeky and I Like You a Lot.” Produced in collaboration with renowned South African photographer Roger Ballen, it has been viewed more than 170 million times on YouTube. “I watched the video clip many times and showed it to my mom. When she saw it, she said to me, ‘They’re using you, you’re the weird thing,'” said “Tokkie.”

  Above all, Mr. du Preez described a horrible childhood immersed in violence, drugs, sex and solitude. After adopting him, he was welcomed into the band’s home, in an upscale neighborhood of Johannesburg. Most of the time, he was alone, while the musicians travelled around the world. For two years, they left him at home with a babysitter while they lived in Los Angeles.

  When his adoptive parents were there, it was chaos. All kinds of substances were smoked and consumed right next to him, naked women walked around the house and “Ninja” asked “Tokkie” to roll his joints, said Mr. du Preez. The duo, who often depicted the world of the Cape Town townships in their short film clips, had close ties with the city’s gangs. A killer nicknamed “Anies” became “Tokkie’s” friend. He has since been murdered. Mr. du Preez also remembered a “training camp” where he learned to handle “all sorts of weapons” during one month, as well as strange rituals.
