Dying Light 2’s 2024 Roadmap Explained

Techland’s Dying Light 2 is ramping up for another year of free updates, which will include new combat options, gear, and crossovers.

2024 is set to be a solid year for fans of Dying Light 2: Stay Human, as the open-world, zombie-laden action-adventure title will be receiving a slew of free content. The 2022 release adopted a semi-live-service model, with developer Techland delivering a steady stream of expansions and limited-time, in-game events post-launch. Now that it has to face off against fellow zombie action title Dead Island 2, it will be interesting to see what Techland has up its sleeve.

Dying Light 2‘s cooperative multiplayer has always been a core element of the experience. Like its predecessor, the game can be played alone or with up to three players. This focus on co-op is something that aided the first Dying Light when it came to longevity, as players would regularly revisit the game to engage in side content or replay missions with friends. Now, the sequel is adding additional incentives to keep players invested, with Techland announcing Dying Light 2‘s content roadmap earlier this year. This free content will roll out alongside the game’s second paid DLC, which is also set for a 2024 release.

What’s Coming to Dying Light 2

Since announcing the roadmap back in September, Techland has already released some new features for Dying Light 2, including a weapon repair system, combat finishers, and new enemy variants. These additions are only the beginning, according to the developer, as a spate of hyped-up features will be making their way to the game over the course of the next few months. A few planned features worth highlighting include:

• New weapons
• New Nightmare difficulty
• The addition of firearms

Techland will also be continuing its tradition of limited-time events within Dying Light 2, similar to those found in other live-service titles. The game previously hosted crossover events with IPs like The Walking Dead and Vampire: The Masquerade, featuring themed activities, gear, and environmental changes. This December, the game will feature the Winter Celebrations event, which will be based around holidays like Christmas, and an unspecified anniversary event will follow early next year.

At the time of writing, the exact timeline for the arrival of certain features is somewhat unclear. Dying Light 2‘s last major update was in October 2023, and it delivered several of the changes that Techland had touted in the announcement of the game’s roadmap. However, some of the most meaningful updates, like the addition of guns, have yet to hit the game, and most of Dying Light 2‘s post-launch content has been built around cosmetics and new gear. With major updates coming in 2024, Dying Light 2 will hopefully continue to feel fresh to its fans.

While all the new content on the way is surely an exciting prospect for many Dying Light 2 players, there are others who may not be as enthused about the idea of the 2024 roadmap. For many, Dying Light 2 is primarily a single-player, narrative experience, and Techland’s decision to treat it more like a live-service title is somewhat disappointing. The free content, in-game events, and crossovers may be more reminiscent of a free-to-play game like Fortnite than a story-focused, action-horror RPG. This negative sentiment is exacerbated by the existence of Dying Light 2‘s in-game store, which arrived well after the game’s initial launch and proved, perhaps unsurprisingly, to be controversial. Whether Dying Light 2‘s adoption of Games-as-a-Service elements is good or bad is a subject for debate, but it’s clear that Techland’s commitment to the game has played a role in its continued longevity.
